For a reef, make sure you have two things. Good lights -- T5s would be your best bet for a 55 gallon tank, and a good protein skimmer.

You have a wide range of options for your next fish, stick with reef safe fish since you want corals down the road, and skip any tangs -- your tank is to small for tangs.

What do you think of red or purple firefish? A few of those would do well in a new tank. Or a reef safe wrasse. Or a few green chromis -- they'll school and are pretty.
