My buddy told me that you can make your own Calcium out of Prestone Driveway heat and by baking baking soda (Buffer). Is this true and has anyone done it? If it works it will save us all a bunch of money and make us look like fools for spending the cash on Chemicals.

I use baking soda for buffer. If you bake it at 400* for an hour,it will raise the PH.

When you can't count on 911,put you're trust in 1911.

Here's an article explaining how to make a Do-it-Yourself Two-Part
Calcium and Alkalinity solution
using dowflake or Prestone driveway heat. I've seen quite a few people over on RC with nice tanks that use this recipe.

Mrs. Wage's Pickling Lime

It's the same exact thing as Kalkwasser mix (kalkwasser is the german word for lime water), you can buy that locally

I can't explain that article any simpler, it just explains how to make a two-part solution for dosing calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium . But going back to your initial question Preston Driveway heat is 90-97% calcium chloride therefore it in itself is calcium. So it's not that your making calcium out of driveway heat, it is calcium.
