Ive picked it up a couple of times and it doesnt stink at all. I have noticed that there is a half of a bivalve shell(thats what it looks like anyways) that is either lodged in the main shell or is part of the conch itself. That is what I am wondering do conches have an internal shell or is the shell stuck in the opening of the main shell?

PS the LFS had it in a mix of shells and sand, mostly shells.

I started cycling my tank with a yellow belly damsel. I later added a percula clown and the damsel would only bother him if he went near the damsels cave. The clown stayed on the other side and never seemed to be bothered. After about 2 weeks the clown started loosing his color and died. Water conditions all good, not real sure what happened. Well I later added a Maroon Clown wich is slightly larger than the damsel and the damsel beat the $%^# out of him. I rearanged the rocks and he still did it. I through him in the fuge and think I will take him back to the LFS. Why does he pick on the larger Maroon clown and not the smaller percula? Threatened by his size, didn't see the percula as a threat?

P.S. Maroon Clown is fine now.

Ok, so I bought 10 hermit crabs, and 2 of them are scarlet crabs. Those 2 drive me nuts!! A few days after I got them, I couldn't find my 2nd scarlet! I know they're good at hiding, but no sign of the 2nd scarlet for days. Then all of a sudden, I saw a stray dismembered claw floating on the sand! I had never seen a crab molt, let alone leave a leg that looked like it was torn off...but sure enough, a week later, there goes the 2nd one...happy as a ... crab.

But today, I freaked cuz I saw one of my scarlet's body parts! This time, it was 4 legs, plus what seemed to be an eaten upper body, no sign of the shell. So I figured, dang. I guess it died and the others ate it....low and behold, tonight, I now see both of my scarlets. This molting thing is crazy!!! I didn't think they'd leave complete looking body parts all over the place LOL

Sorta skipping around topics with my posts :) I've resolved to do a refugium to lower my nitrate problem.

Ok...a couple of things. I already posted on the diy section about pros and cons of making my own ro/di, but the idea got shot down LOL which is fine. Right now, with my nitrates being off the charts as it is and having nitrates in my tap, I will need a better source of water to do my partial changes to get rid of my nitrates. I thought of just buying the water from my lfs...over the course of doing daily changes due to my bad water, it would probably cost me about $30. Then I was eventually going to buy my own ro/di. What I'm confused about is do most people use their ro/di as PART of their aquarium, or just to filter out the tap before putting in the tank? Do some people integrate an ro/di into their system?

Next...my lr placement. I'm going to be getting more and more live rock once my water changes are done. I noticed a lot of pictures of peoples' tanks, and I noticed their lr's are heavily concentrated on the base of the tank (maybe they have more surface area space? My tank is a 45 HIGH, so it's quite tall...34L X 10W x28H, roughly). I arranged my lr in sort of a row, stacked them up (see image -- I will be getting more pre-cured lr's once my nitrates are in check). Is there a "rule of thumb" when arranging the lr's? Looks so barren compared a a lot of seasoned tanks I've seen :) I'm takin' it slow!!!
