I highly recommend a skimmer.You can have a successful system without one but you will have to be diligent with water changes.It is considered one of the most important equipment in a saltwater aquaria.

Definitely yes with a protein skimmer. Trying to run a tank without one is a huge challenge and should be left to the pros (I would never dare to run my tank without a skimmer, personally).
