how far should the light be from the top of the water

also what does the plastic cover do?

With that light fixture,definitely hang it from the ceiling.18''-24'' at first,then lower until it gives you heat issues.Even with hanging the lights and cooling fans,it still may give you heat issues on such a small tank.You are going to get fast evaporation so stay on top of that.

The eggcrate lets the light in and keeps fish from jumping out.

oh right not i have no problem with fish jumping out

i have 2 clowns in a uncovered tank

I do not believe you need a mh fixture for 12 gallons, the reason for mh over others is if the system is too deep and you cannot get the intensity you need at the bottom. since you are what??? 12 to 14 inches of water collum compacts or t-5s will give you plenty.

t5 are all you need im getting some 24" off ebay 56 watts 50 bucks that includes shipping
