Lights on a timer?

My tank lights are on a 12 hour timer. Off at night and on during the day. Is that bad or good? I have a handful of fish and 2 bubble tip anemones in an 80 gallon tank.

Re: Lights on a timer?

Your tank has only been running for a couple of weeks and you have two bubble tip anemones?

What kind of lights do you have? Anemones need A LOT of light, like 8 watts per gallon, to do well. Even more light than corals. And they usually do not survive in tanks that are younger than a year old or so. They are VERY difficult animals to keep, and when they get sick or die, they can crash your tank and kill every other animal in it with them.

As for your question, it's fine to use timers. But I hope that for your anemones' sake that you have the correct lighting to keep them alive. If not, I would take them back to the store ASAP before they kill everything in your tank, because if they don't have enough light or are put into a new tank, they are just dying a slow death.

i agree with Biff, this hobby is nothing like freshwater. you can not just mix water and go buy what you want. it takes time and RESEARCH. take the anemones back to where you got them ASAP.

I agree with Biff... Was your tank established before you got it? What lights you running? BTA's are pretty rough for a new tank. One dies, it will kill the other and everything else in your tank..

Re: Lights on a timer?

OK, I've taken the bubbles back. I'm down to 3 damsels and 2 clowns. The guy at the store said the bubbles were the easiest to care for. I'm not ready for that yet. I do have one little green anemone and he was growing on a snails back when I put in all the snails and crabs. He's made his way over to a rock and has been doing fine since. What else can I do to keep this tank moving in the right direction?

Re: Lights on a timer?

Bubble tips are the easiest of the anemones, he was right about that. That's only because the other ones are really really hard to keep! But they are still one of the most difficult animals to keep.

The green anemone could be a pest. Could you get a picture of it for us? Some anemones are really bad for your tank (google aiptasia and majano) and should be removed ASAP.

How much live rock do you have in the tank? And what kind of equipment do you have?

Re: Lights on a timer?

The guy at the store said this wasn't bad when he gave me the snail. He did see it before he gave it to me. I've been feeding it by hand.
