sump/refugium

I have a sump/refugium. My LFS told me to put filter floss on the side where the water drops into the sump vs. Bio balls. I have read on a few different sites to use bioballs. Any thoughts or suggestions.

Also, on the fuge I am using 30 watts aquarium white Flourecent bulbs(or however to spell that) Can I use just a standard white flourecent or does it need to be a specific grow light?

For chaeto the light you mention will be good enough. If you want other macro-algae then I would change the bulb to something in the 6500k range.I would put rock rubble fully sermerged underwater. Then if you want to remove fine particles then put floss on top....replace every week.

Re: sump/refugium

I would not use bioballs unless you can dedicate yourself to thoroughly cleaning them regularly (about once a week). If you don't keep them clean they can lead to nitrate problems.
