changing lights.

I have a 75 gallon tank with a 45 inch 2 X 150 sunpod metal hallides. I have about 6 or 7 sps corals and various other corals. I have noticed that all most all my sps coral are bleaching from the bottom up. My parameters are perfect. Nitrate and nitrite are almost at 0. Phosphates are at 0, PH is at about 8.2. Calcium is at about 480 to 500. Alkalinity is perfect about 10-11and specific gravity is perfect. I have a sunpod which is only about 300 watts total. Has 14k bulb so blue lights not necessary (at least that is what they say). I talked to a local pet store and he said he had the same problem and had to upgrade to the 2 X 250 (500 watt total, 14k) in his 75 gallon sps coral. I am thinking about doing the same. My pet store is going to take back my 2 X 150 and let me upgrade to the 2 x 250's . Has anyone else had the sunpod. Have they had this problem. Some one told me I should keep sps's with only sps's is this true? Please let me know.
Michael

Re: changing lights.

it depends on the SPS your keeping some require more light and some require less light but it sounds like you've got some that require more light. 2x250w is not a bad way to go. I love the 2x250w over my 72 bowfront. how tall is your tank from top to bottom and how far from the surface of the water are your sps pieces?

Re: changing lights.

also before changin over to 250w you may also want to think about trying 10,000k or 20,000k bulbs which give off more PAR than 14,000k bulbs. it may and may not solve your issue.

Re: changing lights.

Sound like not enough light, that's about 4 wpg, which is usually not enough for SPS.

Lots of hard core SPS keepers keep only SPS, but you don't have to. Soft corals release toxins in to the water which can stunt the growth of SPS, but if you don't have a lot of softies, I don't think there's much of a difference. Just don't put the SPS downflow of the softies.

Re: changing lights.

How is your water movement. Sometimes when you are not getting enoungh flow into the center of the coral they will start to die from the inside.
