alright, tell me about freedom filters

these things sound bad to the bone, but you know how folks like to sell their products. does anyone have one? does it truly do what it says it does? if it does how come everyone dont have one?

Re: alright, tell me about freedom filters

Looks like they integrated a small skimmer into a canister filter design to me, would probably have to clean it weekly like a canister. Would probably be good for a FOWLR if you had a full time real skimmer as well. Just my two cents I havent used one but looking at the design and read up that is what I gather.

Re: alright, tell me about freedom filters

yeah, it says that it actually cleans itself, you dont have to clean the filter media. the only thing you have to do is change out the carbon monthly and replace the pump when it goes bad. sounds too good to be true, but man it sure would be nice!

Re: alright, tell me about freedom filters

here is one of the questions from the FAQ's on that link:

Q: Do I have to clean the filter sponges that are in the housing?
A: No. Because of the configuration of the Freedom Filter and how it works, the sponges are self cleaning. Over time, the biological activity in the sponges will flourish and excess waste will be skimmed out of the system
