Fish only question

Hi all. In a fish only tank, do I still need a powerhead and protein skimmer? I don't plan on having any corral, just a fish only tank due to my love of puffer fish (not reef safe).

55 gallon saltwater (cycling), reef rock (not live), Penguin power filter.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Other Intrests: Anything with my 2 sons, fish, and playing golf

Re: Fish only question

A power head will keep the water circulating and airiated so there is no stale spots, and a skimmer will greatly help out by reducing the nutrients from messy eaters like your puffer

Re: Fish only question

Thanks for the advice guys.

Any suggestions on what brand of skimmer and powerhead (on a budget) for a 55 gallon tank?

Just a side note: I don't have the puffer yet (I didn't want you to think I was cycling my tank with fish).

Re: Fish only question

My coralife super skimmer has been a good buy for the cost given its performance about $90 for the 65 model $140 for the 125 model.A couple of Rio 600s in each corner should only set you back about $30 or so.Marine depot has some good pricing if need mail order.

Re: Fish only question

The powerhead will also give your fish some exercise.
