Keeping tanks cool
In the southern hemisphere its just that start of what looks like a long hot
summer. Any suggestions besides buying a chiller on keeping my tank cool on a heatwave day? |

Re: Keeping tanks cool
Temp gets into the upper 90s here.. my tanks are in an un airconditioned
shed/building. I run many halides (6x400 and 2x 175). 4x 400 over a 5 foot tank. with a few properly placed fans (aimed at the water) my tanks have only risen to 3 degrees above where I normally keep them. I do keep my tanks at natural reef temps so that when the temps do spike, there inst as much of a swing.. My corals/fish dont mind going from 84 to 87, but if they had to go from 78 to 87 there would likely be stress issues . |

Re: Keeping tanks cool
How many of other keep your tanks at 84F?
It sounds unusual for me... BTW - average world reefs temp is rather closer to 80F, not 84F. Re: Keeping tanks cool
I was looking at the CoolWorks Ice Probe, which retails for $109.99 here. It uses something called a Peltier device for cooling. You could order a Peltier assembly here for $19.95, add a DC power supply and probe and have the same thing for about $40.
I've never tried them though, so I don't know how it would work. I had a/c problems for a week this summer and found that just a fan on the tank was sufficient to keep things cool. Regards, Dave.
