Maroon Clownfish or another anemone for hosting
I posted an earlier msg. about Tangs but as well I have a question
about clownfish/anemones. I have a 125 gallon reef tank and currently have a Yellow Tang, Sailfine Tang, a couple Percola Clownfish, a Bubble Tipped Anemone, a Royal Gramma, a Mandarin, and a Firefish Goby. My question, the bubble tip anemone I have doesn't host the clownfish. I have heard that it will host Maroon Clownfish but I'm concerned if adding another clownfish would get along with these other two clownfish that have been in the tank for a year even though it's a large tank. I like the maroon clown but part of the reason I'm interested is today me and my fiancee saw a tank with a anemone and maroon clownfish in it. If it's easier to just get another anemone that my percola clowns would go in I'm interested. Should I look at another anemone they may like or is there something I could look at? I have heard they like Long Tentacle Anemones but yet I've heard they need a DSB and I just have a thin layer of sand. Of course as well I've heard the only sure way for this to work is to buy both the anemone and clownfish together out of the same tank. |

The answer to your question is that the Tangs aren't likely to get along with the new Maroon nor is the Maroon likely to get along with the old Clowns. Tangs are pretty violent as are Maroons. Tangs should always be added to the tank last as they will establish the tank and all the critters in it as their own and new comers aren't usually welcome. To have a maroon with your other clowns it would have been best to add them at the same time. This is not always the case though. One way to test the theory would be to put the new fish in a breeder net in the tank and see how the others react to it and it to them. If it looks good release it into the tank and watch closely for several days. If any of the fish are picking on any of the others be prepared to remove the victim at once. After a couple weeks you can probably relax. As for the Anemones. Some Clowns don't take to them at all. You may never find one that suits him. There's no way to be sure until you have them in together. Be careful of buying another Anemone though as some will kill others and your other fish too. HTH Ed |

Maroon Clownfish or another anemone for hosting Group: rec.aquaria.marine.reefs Date: Tue, Sep 23, 2003, 11:27pm (PDT+7) From: markwco*remove to reply*@comcast.net (MarkW) I posted an earlier msg. about Tangs but as well I have a question about clownfish/anemones. I would get the anemone compatible with your clowns. You also need lots of lighting for LT's. Check out books by Joyce Wilkerson. Re: Maroon Clownfish or another anemone for hosting
Give it time. I have a true percula in my BTA, and it took a few weeks for it
to jump in. It has been there ever since. Some dive right in, some wait 8 months to do so, some never will. Others will use the BTA and frogspawn (insert any other softy) alternately, as they please. Re: Maroon Clownfish or another anemone for hosting
I was wondering how safe Tomato clownfish would be to add or would I
have the same problem with them? |

Re: Maroon Clownfish or another anemone for hosting
Trying to combine various clowns in one tank is the problem. Most of the time,
2 of one species is your limit. However, you do have a 125g... so you might find it possible to have more than one type in there. The Tangs leave the Maroon alone. They have their moments but most of it is bluster. After 7 years together they get on fine. They are all very similar in size though, and there is no top dog. Though when if push came to shove, my money is on the powder blue. |

I have owned tangs for over 20 years and have never had any problems with them being aggressive to smaller/dissimilar fish such as clowns when added to a tank after the tang has been in for years and has established his tank (IME they don't establish territory it's the entire tank the other hand not like the addition of anything of the shape and especially color of themselves. this is not to say that you cant have the same problems as Ed described above but IME tangs will tend to ignore the smaller/dissimilar fish. kc |

I guess I should have highlighted the part of my response about "this is not always the case" My answer was kinda due to the loss of my first fish (about 3 days ago). I have a 55 gallon tank (FOWLR/LS). It started out with one Yellow Striped Maroon Clown and two False Percula Clowns. I added all three of these fish at the same time. I then bought a larger YSMClown for my new 30 gallon reef tank. I asked the group if I could put it in with the other Clowns in the 55 (thinking fry). Most thought it not a good idea based on the other Clowns in the tank. So I left it in the 30. I then bought a Blue Tang and put it in the 55 with the other 3 Clowns. Right away the YSMClown took to hiding and wouldn't eat. This went on for about 3 days. So to save the YSMClown I moved him to the 30 gallon in a breeders net. After watching for aggression signs for about an hour (none noted) I turned "him have been a happy couple every since. They've even established a nest that the male rearranges at his whim. Now for the other side of the coin. I then went out and purchased two more fish for the 55 gallon tank. I asked my LFS if they would be ok due to the Blue Tang already being in the tank. I told him what some folks on here said about Tangs being added last. He said they would be fine (last time I'll take advice from him). So I put the Blue Damselfish and the Cardinalfish in the tank. The Blue Tang would swim right beside the Cardinal (intimidation) but he didn't seem to be hurting him any. So a few hours later I went to work. When I got home the Cardinal was in the breeders net. My son (a fish keeper himself at the age of 12) had put him there because the Tang had started to attack him. The Cardinal was dead. Now on the other hand the Blue Damselfish (Almost identical in shape, size, and color to the tang) is alive and well. Him and the Tang don't go near each other. The two Percula Clowns are all over the tank. They love everyone and don't seem to have an enemy. As a side note after the Tang killed the Cardinal it moved on to mess with the sole hermit crab in the tank. Sit right on top of it I was told. Well the hermit yelled out "you f*cked with the wrong Marine" and grabbed the Tang with both pinchers. The wife said it took the son about 10 minutes to get the Tang loose. I'm not sure if the hermit really yelled that out though because as I said earlier I was at work. I do know that the Tang now gives the hermit plenty of space. So I guess what it all boils down to is that "your results may vary" but the advice of the group is going to be about the best advice available. Ed |

However, my maroon is ignoring my anemone ... It's possible that my clown is just odd |
