Selcon and garlic serve two different purposes. Selcon consists of vitamins and amino acids. I recommend using both in conjunction with each other.

I just go with Selcon and skip the garlic. Does not work well at repelling mosquitoes either. At least not in Alaska where they are thick enough to be jokingly considered the State bird.
