Re: hibye getting a corn snake!

better idea with the 30 gallon tank. that green carpet is just a disease factory waiting to happen. there is little to NO absorbtion in it so the feces just sit on top and the snake will have no option than to live in it. it takes forever to dry up with the humidity in the tank, not to mention when you try to pick it up, the wet, nasty poo slides off onto the glass. It also STINKS something terrible. It doesn't matter if you use the felt carpet or plastic carpet, they share the same problems. Newspaper is all that experienced herps use. Trust me. If you don't want to believe me, check substrate options on a forum and listen to some of those guys. I don't know if Kingsnake.com is still running, but that is where I used to spend time before I started with marine fish. There is a guy name Rob Carmichael who is the director of a zoo in Illinois who is about the smartest snake guy in the world. He will tell you the same things I am. Up to you

Re: hibye getting a corn snake!

well it IIIIIIS off-topic, but hey, this is Hibye we are talking about here. I was trying to help and having oh, about 30 years of raising snakes (I actually have a corn snake now) probably qualifies me to give direction, not that he will listen to me, but I am a sucker for a charity-case. Unless they piss me off, then I usually cut them up into small pieces and grill them for my Pug.

Re: hibye getting a corn snake!

I currently have a pair of corns in a 40 breeder style, I keep a screen top lid (RAVMA indicates that closed tops tend to lead towards resp illness) and I use coir bedding mixed with pine needles (more like natural enviro as they like to burrow). Had them for 8 years now and I get a clutch that I incubate every year, going strong. I alternate between live and frozen because their are some reports that females that dont' constrict on a semi regular basis have a greater chance of egg binding than those females that do not (again RAVMA). I do prefer heat from lighting, so I have flourescent and incandescent lighting on them.
