New Job!!

As many of you know, I lost my job back in October 2007. We survived, but we sucked our savings account dry and I was barely surviving in February. I finally landed a job estimating for an HVAC duct and spiral pipe manufacturer in late February. We build duct and spiral pipe and sell it to contractors and supply houses.

Somebody called me last week and asked me to come into their office for a job interview. I told them I was working and not really looking, but the guy said he REALLY wanted to talk to me.

I played hookey from work today and interviewed with the guy this morning. He offered me $16,400/yr MORE than I'm making right now. Thats a nice $1300/month raise for me. I accepted the offer. It's 8 minutes from home, instead of 45 minutes away at my current job. Just knowing that I don't have to drive 45 minutes in horrible Denver traffic is enough to make me say "YES!" to the guy. I get a company truck instead of having to drive my worn out 1994 Nissan truck back and forth. I get insurance for my entire family in 30 days. Paid vacations and holidays after 90 days. And he said I can leave early on Thursdays to fly airplanes at the club.

I'll save $250/month just in gasoline. Plus the raise and not having to use my own truck for transportation.

I'm so happy right now.

Thank you all.

The new job is an estimating position and part-time project management (PM). Instead of just estimating the cost of the duct and piping on the job for a manufacturer, I'll be working for one of the contractors who purchases materials from the manufacturer where I currently work. I'll be estimating the entire job from the rooftop units down to the labor to install all the duct. The rentals on the cranes and scissor lifts, the starter units for the exhaust fans and the economizers for the rooftop units. And all the labor to do all that work. These are $1M projects. Biggest I've ever dealt with. Up till now, I've only touched a few projects in the $200,000--$350,000 range. A $1M project is big time in this industry, especially considering the economy.

We're using a software called QuoteSoft. It's sheet metal and piping specific software. HVAC and pipe fitting. Actually pretty cool stuff. I have to keep my current materials prices up to date or the company can loose major money giving away materials at cost or below costs. Prices are fluctuating up and down, but mostly up--in a hurry. Steal is 73 cents per pound. It was 50 cents less than 6 months ago. Can you say "shortage" and "inflation"?

I'm hoping this is a good move for me. It's more money and a helluva lot closer to home. The people seam smart and friendly so far. I was a little insulated at the manufacturing job. They are basically the last in line to feel any economic pinch. Housing contractors fell out first. They all moved over to doing commercial jobs to stay alive and keep food on the table. That meant more work for the duct and pipe manufacturer (me). More contractors doing more work. With the new job, I'll actually be working for a contractor. They are less insulated from any slowing economic progress. The manufacturer would most likely be the more insulated of the two--but it's such a good job that I'm not about to pass it up. Closer to home. Closer to the flying field. More money. No more punching a time clock. No more MANDATORY lunch breaks at 12pm on the dot.

I like it better all ready.
