Maintance mistakes

We've all made em.So lets see em.
This morning, after doing my weekly water change,I took the cups off my skimmers to clean them out.Well,I sit the cups down on the salt bucket to clean my koralias. After I got the koralias cleaned I put them back in place, plugged em into the power strip(the same one my CSS 125 and 65 are plugged into) and plugged it in.With even looking,I turned right around and walked into the ketchin ,got a cup of coffee, and walked back into the bed room to double check.Thats when I noticed the skimmers had pumped close to 5 gallons of salt water into the carpet.Needless to say,the wife was not a happy camper over that one.

Re: Maintance mistakes

I've tried to clean my skimmer by unscrewing the uppermost portion of it (neck and collection cup) without thinking to turn the thing off first. Water came spewing out of the top of the skimmer while I frantically tried to screw the neck back on.

Oh and let's not forget the usual occurrence of me somehow splashing water all over the place, then going to re-plug something into one of the power strips and getting shocked.

Re: Maintance mistakes

I once triped on the way to clear out my skimmer cup. Skimmate went all over the place. The smell was awful

Re: Maintance mistakes

when I was learning how to use my eheim 2213 filter I took the spray bar and put it on top of my tank when the canister was clean I plugged it back and and forgot to put the spray bar back into the inside of the tank. I got a nice shower of salt water right to the face from that one.

Re: Maintance mistakes

been lucky so far but newbie mistakes from when i first started were the best, i was dumb enough to dump reef buffer(powder form) into tank without dissolving and it landed on a few corals and they shriveled up and melted.

Re: Maintance mistakes

I switched salts. Didn't have the right buffer to boost the pH up where it should be (didn't know-honest mistake), so I kept putting more in each day. The bottle said it could take a week or more to stabilize. I was putting in 1 teaspoon per day. Dissolve it in RO water and use it as top off water daily.

About 12 days into this my tank suddenly turns milky white right before my eyes. Instantly flashed to milk white. Poof!! Looks like good ole vitamin D whole milk!

This is a 30g tank.

I spent the next 2 days frantically using tap water and dechlorintator and new salt mix trying to change out enough water to make the clouded, milky white water go away.

I had the tap adjusted right at 78F and I was literally running it through a hose and into a 24g rubbermaid on the floor. Massive doses of off-the-shelf decholrinater. Dump the salt mix in. Stir frantically for about 10 minutes. Stabilize the salinity.

Then I'd drain about 10g of water out of the 30g display. Dump 10g of new saltwater back in. Stir with a plastic spoon for about 5 minutes. Drain 10g and replace with saltwater from the rubbermaid. Stir. Drain. Fill. Stir. Drain. Fill. Stir. Drain. Fill. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat.

I ran about 100g of water through my 30g tank in a time span of 2 days.

It did NOT suddenly go clear. I had to literally flush the tank 10g at a time until it was diluted enough.

Beware of buffers unless you know EXACTLY what they are going to do and test your ass off when using them. SeaChem Marine buffer will raise your alkalinity well over a dkh of 17. Somewhere around 20-23 it goes milky white. It's supposed to stabilize the pH, but it also allows the alkalinity to creep up slowly.

My only mistake was pure laziness.I let one or two aiptasia turn into hundreds before doing something about it.
