Re: Military/Public Servcie Required!

There are actually very few countries in the world that DONT require young men to serve at least a couple of years in the military.I think Isreal requires 2 years. And that one country that I wouldnt want to tangle with.

I was in the Air Force and I fell into the category of needing to be trained to use a M16 9mm, and shotgun. Since I was a Electronics technician I only saw a weapon 1 time a year, when I had to qualify. Training or not I would have never felt comfortable with a bunch of AF guys protecting me when deployed. It was just not our function. Whenever I was deployed to a location that required security we usually picked up a Army unit for site security. Kind of a joke but it's true

You'd really be surprised how many people in military are not really trained for battle. Lot more needs to be done than just taking that hill over there.

Re: Military/Public Servcie Required!

In Israel, men and women have to serve in the military. However, there are exemptions and exceptions. In order to get out of service, you have to plead your case in front of a judge, and it usually takes several years to get out of serving. One of my best friends was successful in doing so (he was born in Israel, but raised in Germany his whole life. He was a gay pacifist who didn't believe in war, and did not like the idea of having to go to a "strange" country, which Israel was to him, to serve in the military for years, when he had no connection to that country other than it was the place his parents were from. He had to pretty much prove to a court of law that he was gay, and that he had pacifist beliefs).

Anyways, he didn't want to leave his home, the place he'd lived his entire life to serve in what was tantamount to a foreign military, and it took him 2 years of paperwork and court appearances to do this. When it was all said and done, he was able to return to finish his college degree in Germany, which is what he wanted all along.

FYI there is no moral to this story, no one was right, no one was wrong, I was just sharing it.

NDB was in the Special Forces for nearly a decade, and he often had to protect members of other branches of the military, mostly AF.
