Its looking like you are off to a good start. If I were you I would start looking into upgrading from that surface skimmer. Itll tide you over for a while but wont handle much of a bioload.

Sounds good Ryan. How long would you say I have? Do you think I could go until Christmas with usual water changes like I did today with the RO water?

What is your livestock? If you are diligent and keep up with weekly water changes, making sure to blow or suck off the detrious on the rocks and subtrate, you could probably go longer than that. Just make sure you monitor your nitrates(dropper test like refered in other thread). If you start seeing them getting above say 20ppm then you need to do more frequent changes.

If you add fish sparingly and not too fast, you can definitely make it until December. In a small-ish tank like yours, lots of people rely on water changes very heavily since water parameters can be hard to keep in check.
