Re: Dr Marco's Reef Build

In my experience, SPS grow faster under T5s than MH. When I had my T5s, I started out with a 1-inch frag of birdsnest, and 4 months later it was the size of a softball. But then it died when my tank boiled .

I am seeing much slower growth under my new MH. I've had about 20 frags for 2 months now, and MAYBE they've grown 1 cm more, except for the montiporas, which, you're right, spread much faster.

So my answer is, there is no answer. It all depends.

Re: Dr Marco's Reef Build

I am hopeful to have some noticeable growth in a few months. I also have no idea how long it takes the SPS to encrust on the LR. Do they attach themselves?

Re: Dr Marco's Reef Build

Yep, the encrusting corals attach themselves. I initially glued mine down using epoxy or superglue, and they've just spread to the neighboring rocks.

Re: Dr Marco's Reef Build

I am SO not patient. I am literally itching to have those SPS corals make colonies. I still love fish more than corals, but I am about 60% fish and 40% corals. I think I like corals because they make the fish look prettier.

Re: Dr Marco's Reef Build

You and me have been mostly softies and LPS keepers. SPS that grow fast is still considered slow compared to softies.I bought two 1'' frags in March, they are now 3'' inches...woohoo!Slow yes but they are growing considering some of the set-backs I had.It does seem that montis grow much faster.

I'm going to start dosing that liquid reactor stuff and see if it doesn't help.No way am I going to fork up the $$$ for a calcium reactor.Magnesium is another thing I'm going to test and dose for if needed.

Re: Dr Marco's Reef Build

yeah. I guess I am trying to compare the growth of SPS to, say my nepthia, which has grown to about 5 times its origional size since February of this year, and my yellow star polyps. Kinda unfair to the SPS, I recognize, but I have been looking for ways to speed it up more. So far, no go

Re: Dr Marco's Reef Build

So, after several tense moments, the keyhole angel is no longer in my 90. He is chillin with his new friends in the 125. He tried to outsmart me, but I could not allow it and nabbed him with the speed and accuracy of a Ninja-Jedi on performance-enhancing suppliments. Here are pics:

Re: Dr Marco's Reef Build

I forgot to mention that there was one fatality. My new wrasse did not make the capture. He was hiding under a rock the whole time, actually, since yesterday, and has not been eating. the stress was too much for him and he ate the big one. Oh well. I had him for a week and was not super-attached to him. I will go out and get another one. The tank is recovering and is still a bit cloudy. I will get pics up when I can.
