DIY Quiet Your Overflow Instructions...

Let me know hiw it goes with construction and setup... I have a durso that gurgles all night long now, ticks me off..

awesome i saved that link as a favorites and will do it when i set up the sump thats been sittin around in my room for 4 mos for my 80g

I assume he used a 1" tube due to having a 1" drain? What If i have a 1 1/2" drain? swap the parts for larger ones? keep the same configuration?

yeah, you just swap out the pipe for whatever you need. i have to admit i'm quite amazed. i have an overflow hob and have thought of several way to improve it. height is a restriction for me. if i remember correctly your tank is drilled.... not so much of an issue so i'd say go for it like the plans state. this is one of those great cheap reward DIY's.

I have durso stand pipe that made for my overflow box. I made noise with just the drilled holes so I made a hole for airline tube that I can adjust the hight. If you alrready have a standpipe give this a try it really worked for me.

the biggest trick with the durso stand pipe is getting the air bleed hole at the top the right size. mine made noise forever. I got mad at it one day and drilled the hole a lot bigger. now it's perfectly silent. no noise whatsoever.

I have been thru like 5 caps on my durso, it seems when I get the right size hole/holes in the cap, it works ok for a few days, then gets noisy again.... Gonna try building the HGB like Newport..

another trick I have found is, not letting the drain pipe go very deep into the water in the sump. it takes more force to get rid of the water when it's in 8 inches of water versus one inch.

I had to do some modifications but it's working just great now. I guess it's one of those things that needs to be adjusted with individual needs.

scrapped it, my durso works better than the HGB... Has to do with the larger drain I am thinking... Did a little modding with the durso and it works ok now..

The Durso? What's that? Funny enough the guy at the LFS store told me to put a rag over the overflow. Works the best out of everything I tried.

until the rag stops up!

no, you don't put it in the water. my tank isn't drilled so i'm using the thingy that hangs on the back. with that i can put a towel on top where the water goes down to the sump and it totally seals the noise. so the rag doesn't get wet and i don't have any problems.

Here's my HOB overflow silencer. It works perfect. Dead silent.

oh, I understand what you're doing now. I did the same thing with a piece of cardboard before I built my durso.
