Fromia Statfish

Amba

Ol' Salty
I lost another fromia today, that makes two. Poor little guys just melt after 2 weeks or so. Why could this be? My parameters are fine.

What exactly are your parameters?

Star fish are VERY susceptible to high nitrates. As in 5ppm or so. Also, they need to be acclimated slowly, never be exposed to air, or large swings in salinity.

Ammonia and Nitrites are undetectable
Nitrate looks to be between 3 and 4 but I can't ever tell the color difference.
Salinity is .023
Calcium is 425ppm
He had a 3 hour acclimation, just like the last one I had.

Could be that they were exposed to air, (not sure how sensitive they are, it's just what is said all the time), or maybe there isn't enough food?

The problem is the starfish. Much like the infamous moorish idol they just cannot be kept in our tanks. I just had one that lived for just over one month before it "melted" away just as you described. They are just not meant to be.

Exactly. Fromia's do not do well in captivity.
This is one species better left in the oceans.

What about linkia? Dennis what is the one that's in your tank its really nice looking. What about african red knobs has anyone tried those?

Mine came out of the gulf. But I don't know exactly what it is.
Never been able to I.D. it.

Not sure about Linkia stars but I think they are better than Fromia.
Someone else can probably answer that better than me.

the red knobs are really nice and very hardy but are definately not reef safe... I had to get rid of mine due to munching on a few different soft corals.. linkia I havent really had alot of success with either but that was just me..

Dang the linkia are really neat looking too, my LFS had one today for 25 bucks and it was good size. And darn on the red knob.

Mine too especially the red knobs but alas I cannot have one. I did get a bunch of new frags today, check em out in my 29 gal thread. :p
