Has anyone or do you know of anyone that has been to a Marine Biology camp? what do you think?

My daughter has wanted to be a Marine Biologist forever, She has been taking extra biology courses and helping out at our local college. She had her heart set on attending Scripts in San Diego.. Just recently she has started to change her mind because of a boy that she is getting pretty close to She is 17 and will be graduating next year, she has been recently talking about just staying and going to college here.

don't get me wrong I will support her in whatever she decides, but would like to help her to stay focused on this dream that she has had forever. I was considereing sending her to a marine biology camp this summer to see if that will help her decide what she truely wants to do, without this boy influencing her.

I have been doing alot of internet research and have found some very good programs that will even earn her college credits.

I went to Marine Biology camp at the Acadia Institute of Oceanography (Maine) when I was in 11th grade. It was AWESOME!! I'd highly highly recommend it.

No problem. It was definitely one of the better camps my parents sent me to (they'd send me to a different one every year).

I mean, winter survival camp in Germany was more like prison camp (up at 4 am, they'd make us wear keds, shorts and tank tops and run in the snow, do pushups in the snow, and swim through frozen lakes), survival camp in Zimbabwe was terrifying (I was convinced I was going to get eaten by wild animals every night).

So yeah, marine biology camp in the United States was a very nice change

Yeah I'm serious. I grew up overseas. I attended a lot of strange camps. My parents were convinced it would "build character".

i'm telling you right now, AVOID SCRIPTS!!

altho its highly rated their aquarium SUCKS and is VERY horrible... i would not recommend that school to ANYONE. I wanted to go there forever until i went and checked it out... its just not what it used to be. its really gone down hill and doesn't have all the teachers it used to. Alot of things now are more about textbook training and not about the field... dont EVEN get me started on their aquarium. my PETCO has better fish treatment... and thats saying ALOT. I have plenty of pictures as proof sadly...

if shes wanting real good hands on learning try going to CSU Monterey Bay or even Hawaii Uni. CSUMB (where i'm goin) is an amazing small campus located on fort ord in monterey and everything is very hands on... OH did i mention they hook you up with a paying job AND school units at the same time? they have you intern at the aquarium and you get paid plus it covers 5 units of needed classes PER semester! not to mention its very easy if you know the right people to land yourself a scholarship :3

http://www.hawaii.edu/HIMB/ (thats hawaii, best program everrrrr... shark city! WOO!)
http://catalog.csumb.edu/site/x716.xml (CSUMB, where i'm transing in the spring)

or go to San Diego SU. They also have a great marine bio program and the department is amazing. you can also get an internship at sea world and they will pay half of your tuition and books if you work there prior

i looked into all the schools for this stuff.. .HU is amazing and I plan on getting my masters there in a year or so

and if you're willing to fly her outta state the aquarium here does a great intern program that i actually started with. it teaches you the basics and you can even get school/college credits for it even tho its a winter/summer program if ya want more info hit me up its really a great fun time and you get to meet a lot of cool people... peter benchley, david doublet (national geographics photog), jane goodall... just to name a few

http://www.montereybayaquarium.org/l...idseq_soc.aspx

check that out, and oh btw... the whole application process... i know some people lol the student guide program would be the one she'd be interested in
any specific field she wants to do? I know in hawaii there is a sea turtle program and baja cali also does one thats a great neat experience if you want programs in cali i could hook you up I have quite the contact list lol

depending on where you go and what specifics you wanna major in can totally help you too... i am actually hooked up with the "air jaws" guys for a trip in 2012 to Masa Bay Africa to study them big jumpers!! and it all started thanks to people at the AQ here and getting to meet them. Alot of the people that work at the aquarium are professors at CSUMB so you learn alot about things and they actually have become my second family I look forward to seeing them.... i knew em before they were my professors but none-the-less everything i have learned i owe to them
