Reefing newb
My friend who own a lfs, who went to school for marine biology, is not confident that a refugium is the best thing. On one side it takes out phosphate and nitrate which is great, but one point I've never seen talked about, does it take out a lot of nutrients that help the corals grow. The macro algae grows extremely quick compared to corals. He has tanks that have them and don't have them, his point to me is my parameters are all in a good range why add one. My thoughts of adding one is anything to keep my water as perfect as possible why not? Anyone have any thoughts?
Thanks

Every tank is different, a refugium isnt just for nutrient export it is also a place for pods to live without being eaten. For that aspect and what nutrient export it gives my tank I like it. Most of the hobby sized refugiums are to small to really make a huge impact on nutrient export. It is more of a cumulative approach for water quality. Skimmer, fuge, carbon/gfo....and a lot of live rock.
