I have a bag of bioballs I took out of my tank about 2 years ago and never looked back. If you have live rock, as fast suggested, then there is no need for bioballs. They are more of a nitrate liability than they are worth, in my opinion.

I know it's a little late but I've seen some products thay in saltwater will leach phos or metals. Im not a chemist but i assume it has something to do with the salt/trace elements breaking the carbon down. I started buying Seachem at Amazon when the LFS started selling marineland only.

My first reef was a 55 corner with a remora c skimmer only. Ran that tank with a MH light and a couple T5's for 3 years with great results. It most definitely can be done.
