    Clear stringy stuff

After further research, this appears to be a bacterial bloom. Sometimes caused by aersol/cleaning agents in the air that land into your water. Apparently Dr. Tims Wasteaway chemical has been successful at eliminating this bloom. Anyone have experience with it? I ordered some yesterday.

    Clear stringy stuff

Hi LR - please see the photo I've attached. This stuff recently popped up on my newly cycled tank, at around the 75 day mark in the cycle. My ammonia, nitrates have all been next to 0.0. I'm still dosing with RedSea NOPOx. I've sucked out a big batch of this stuff once, and it has regrown in a...

Cost of Red Sea Max E-260 vs E-170

Ok that is good to know. I was worried that with the 260, time and money costs would scale. I was budgeting about $2,500 total for the new setup, meaning everything I need to get going in the first few months. I realize after that I can steadily add fish/coral at a manageable rate. I just didn't...

Cost of Red Sea Max E-260 vs E-170

Hello LR people. I'm looking at getting back into the reef game, and have decided on the Red Sea Max E-170 or E-260. Does anyone have a good estimate on cost and maintenance comparison between these two sizes? Aside from the obvious tank price. Would it be much harder or time consuming to...

Aren't zoanthids supposed to be easy?

Wow that's strange.. I have no advice, but I would say it's got to be at least part of the reason they aren't opening...

    Reward: $50 for Algae Solution

Not a bad idea - I might redo my tank, to a more "island of live rock/coral." If you couldn't tell in my video, the algae is also growing on my crushed coral substrate. Isn't the consensus to only use live sand in aquariums? Or use a high proportion of live sand to crushed coral? EDIT: Don't...

    Reward: $50 for Algae Solution

My rocks were purchased from 2 separate locations. The first rocks that I got back in January 2012, were from PetCo. Those are the fiji rocks that the algae is growing on. The second batch of rocks I added were from my LFS. No algae problems on them strangely. But earlier this year, around...

    Reward: $50 for Algae Solution

Regarding snails: I have had turbo's, asteria (sp), and I have a few blue leg crabs. Also 2 nass. snails have been in there for months. @FishyReef I am almost certain it's not bryopsis. The algae just looks like hair, and doesn't have a structure to it like a fern. Nudibranch's I have...

    Reward: $50 for Algae Solution

If anyone can provide a long-term solution to my green hair algae problem, I will gladly PayPal you $50 as a reward (once solution has actually worked for a couple weeks). Yes, that is how frustrated I am with this issue. I've even bought a BRS dual reactor for the tank, which I have not...

    Refractometer questions...

Look at the calibration fluid. Mine says "calibrate to 35 ppt" or something like that. So use it as directed. However, you should be able to calibrate RO/DI water.. as it should read 0. I've heard using the calibration fluid is more accurate though.

    Additional Lighting

Thanks Fishy! I'll see. It could be from temperature swings.. I think I also had a little bit of trace ammonia that could have affected it as well. I was a little past due for a water change last night (it had been 10 days probably).

    It's been 3-4 months now I think.

    Additional Lighting

Alright cool. One thing that raised concern was my birdsnest coral. Lately its polyps have been sort of retracted so I thought it may be wanting more light.

    Additional Lighting

I am currently running a Marineland Reef capable LED on my 10g. If I add a nova extreme (2 bulb) 24", would this be a good move? Possibly both bulbs as white bulbs, not one white, one accent. I want to ensure optimal light for my coral, and sufficient light for SPS (currently just 1...

    Cobalt MJ 1200 Pump help

I goofed up..I was thinking the unit could sit outside your tank. For some reason I thought "do not run dry" meant don't turn on without water running through the system. Pretty sure it's burned up lol.
