    Reactor Media

So far my only issue has been that you have to keep the flow extremely low. It only takes a light flow to fluidize this stuff, and it's so small that if you have it a little too high it will get blown right out into your tank. I tried to prevent this by using part of the bag the Purigen came...

    Reactor Media

Has anyone ever tried to use Purigen in a media reactor? I have been running NPX Bioplastics in my reactor for about a year, but I decided it was time to change the media, and thought I might try using the Purigen I had sitting around. It takes almost no flow to fluidize the Purigen, and I...

    has anyone used chemi-pure?

I have run Purigen too. I'm not sure what, if any, effect it has had on my system though. I have been keeping it inside my skimmer so water flows through it on it's way back to my tank, but I removed it yesterday when I was cleaning my skimmer. I am thinking of swapping my Phosban 150 for a...

Don't trust that the RO/DI you buy is good

I've always avoided distilled water because most distillers use copper tubes to condense the water vapor, and that comes with the risk of having traces of copper getting into the system. I don't know if this is a real risk or not, but I never wanted to find out. I was just filling up jugs...

    clown obsessions

+1 Nick Clowns do weird things. You joke about hosting a powerhead, but that's basically what one I used to have did. They pick a favorite spot, or fish in this case, and that is where they live...until they decide they have a new favorite. That's why I love them so much. :)

    Clown fish behavior

I had a pair that did the same thing. No worries. They're called clowns for a reason. You never know what kind of weird things they're going to do. :)

Protein Skimmers for hang-on 100 gallon tank

I love my Reef Octopus BH-1000 for my 38 gallon reef tank. I agree with the others that I would prefer to go with a sump on a 100 gallon. But if HOB is your only option, this is a great skimmer. I think they have a model that is rated for larger tanks, and I would get that one, even though the...

    Octopus BH-300F

I have a BH-1000 on my 38 gallon reef tank and it has been running really well for almost a year now. It's a great solution for those of us who have to go with an HOB skimmer. I recommend Reef Octopus for sure.

    RODI System

I have heard really good things about BulkReefSupply.com and all of their equipment. I actually have a 4-stage RO/DI unit on its way right now, being delivered on Friday. I'll let you know how I like it. After testing my local store's RO water and finding it has 54 ppm TDS, it can't get here...

    has anyone used chemi-pure?

I have a Phosban 150 reactor in which I run a mix of NPX Bioplastics and Chemi-Pure Elite. I think it is a great product, as long as you aren't expecting it to perform miracles. I also highly recommend the bioplastics as a great way to reduce nitrates in any system.

Ecoxotic in line dimmer Model 5027

Good to know, since I just ordered a 36" stunner strip to add to my T5 HO fixture and I ordered this dimmer to go with it. Thanks.

Don't trust that the RO/DI you buy is good

I just thought I would post this as a little warning for anyone that might be helped by it. I have been keeping a reef tank for almost 2 years now. I started in Feb 2011 with a 16 gal bow front tank, and 6 months later upgraded to a 38 gallon tank. I have been using RO/DI water from my...

    Running Bio Pellets

I have a 38 gallon reef tank and I run TLF NPX Bioplastics (500ml) in a Phosban 150 reactor, and I keep a chunk of chaeto in the back of my tank, and without having performed a water change in about 10 months now I have maintained undetectable levels of nitrates in my system. I swear by the stuff.
