    Got new fish

I just got back from vacation. Before I left I bough a dozen astrea (sp) snails a half dozen nassarius one sand snail (orange and white shell about 2" long) and doz hermit crabs. More than half the hermits died, possibly because I didn't acclimate them long enough. I still have about 5. All my...

    It is Ready

3 1/2 weeks after the tankastrophe it is ready. Last week the ammonia was still off the chart. Checked it today it is 0, nitrites are 0 and the nitrates are at 5ppm. I'm going to do a small water change, about 3G. I'll recheck it tomorrow. I'm going on a 2 week vacation on Tues. but I might go...

    Catastrophy Strikes

I might do that now. I couldn't before. I didn't leave enough room between the wall and the tank for one, but when I took the water out I moved the tank forward.

    Catastrophy Strikes

I covered the tank up. Hopefully that'll take care of the hair algae. Worth a shot anyway. I'll check it weekly to see how it's doing. Let ya'll know when it's back to normal.

    Catastrophy Strikes

rc, I don't have a skimmer. not sure about total blackout. I have one coral that is hanging in there, a small one that didn't cost much so I'm leaving it. It peaks out for about an hour then completely hides again. (torch) If it goes I'll try the blackout I guess it won't hurt the nassarius...

    Catastrophy Strikes

the only "livestock" remaining are the snails. The nassarius are still in the tank and living. They come out every night and climb up the glass just like always. The turbos are still hanging in the bucket, but they stopped moving around, but they aren't dead. I've still been changing bucket...

    Catastrophy Strikes

Yes, the starfish died as did most of my crabs. Both in the bucket and those that stayed in the tank. (I had a few I couldn't find) all on the same day too. The snails are the only thing left and I've only lost one. They haven't been coming out though. Seem to be hibernating in their shells...

    Catastrophy Strikes

got a question. My ammonia is still at .25 hasn't gone up anymore yet. Since my filter is an established filter do you think I'll have a spike in the nitrites?? I know this is an opinion question but I'll take any thoughts. The crabs are ok though a few seem frozen in place. I moved a few to...

    Catastrophy Strikes

I got the rocks back in place. Well, not in the same places but stacked and hopefully a little less tipsy. I had to put the crabs back in the tank, they were starting to chow on the starfish (poor guy) I found a few still in the tank that I'd missed. I figure if they made it through the mess the...

    Catastrophy Strikes

OK, I'll check the levels daily. It's still a little cloudy, but nothing like when I first set the tank up. Like I said it never cycled the first time round but was super cloudy for about 7 weeks. I can at least see through to the back of thank. I guess on the plus side I was able to move the...

    Catastrophy Strikes

Are you meaning to wait for them to go up again and fall? I've got it to 0 now with all the new water so are we talking about a new cycle. I'm starting to confuse myself.

    Catastrophy Strikes

I have a tank somewhere, I think hubby left it at work. I can clean it if it's here. How long should I wait? When first set up my tank it never did cycle.
