The beam is for support and its the silicon holding the glass that could bow. Maybe the 75 glass would be think enough, but there has to be a reason why tank company put them on there.

TDS = Total Dissolved Solids You need to check on the Filtered water. I would suggest get a TDS meter. Good way to know when to change the filters. My DO/DI unit came with a dual TDS meter.
