Sorry for the late response, I've been away from home for quite some time.
I was referring to something similar to Big K's structure.
Here are some pictures of how I built one of my "towers".
Everything is held together by plaster. Once the plaster set, I removed all the wires.
This...
It looks great.
Did you use any resin/plastic "skeleton" to keep the tower together in case the load-bearing parts crack/erode?
You don't want a 20 pound baseball bat swinging from inside the tank.
I don't think that is an emerald crab.
Emerald (mithrax) crabs have that distinct spoon-like shape at the very tip of their claws.
That crab has slender and sharp claws. I would not add it to the tank until you have observed it to be a herbivore/scavenger only.
On a sad note, sometime in late 2014 something completely wiped out my euphelias.
I had two nice torch corals and a frogspawn growing fast. Then within 4-5 days they all melted.
No other corals were affected though.
Hey All, it has been a while since I last posted.
Things have been really busy at work.
Anyway, I just wanted to share the progress on my goniopora. I have had gonioporas in the past and they never lived longer than 3-4 months.
Maybe I got a rebel lol.
There is no significant problem with lava rock, you just need to be aware of their properties compared to traditional aragonite type rocks.
Most lava rock has very minimal limestone (if any) due to how they were created.
And in most cases they are completely inert. Now this may be good or bad...
I too have been using NO3:PO4-X for several months now.
I followed the recommended starting dose based on the tank size and then adjusted the dose based on the subsequent NO3/PO4 readings.
I also dose daily with Reef Energy A&B at 8ml each (100 gallon tank)
Based on a Red Sea Pro test kit:

It really depends on what "0" means.
Most test kits would register undetectable nitrates because they do not have resolutions low enough to show the actual values (which may not be really 0).
The 0.25ppm-1ppm recommended nitrates value is to ensure that all zooxanthellae get their allotment of...
For the purpose of bacterial colonization, "porosity" is not in the order of fractions of inches. We are talking about micrometers or even nanometers.
Even coralline algae that would seem like a solid mat over the rock would still be porous enough for the bacteria to colonize with the same...
I had one of those in my frag tank some time ago.
One thing I do not like about them is that the suction cups eventually wear out and the powerhead falls off.
In my frag tank this happened within a couple of months.
Now I just use it as a circulation pump for my salt mixing bucket.
After using...
Unfortunately, you inherited a tank that is way behind the curve.
Majano infestation
There are just so many in your tank that it would take you many months to get rid of all of them.
And there is no guarantee that there are no tiny fragments left that can regenerate.
