    algae in a cycling tank

All I've seen is something black and brown streaking into the rock the second I turn on a light. It's too fast to see it clear and definitely can't take a pic.

And I have a mystery hitch hiker that only comes out in pitch black and as soon as the light turns on quick as hell it disappears into the rock. Anyone kno what that could be? It looks decent sized too.

    algae in a cycling tank

What algaes are good in a tank thats 3 weeks into the cycling period? And what do they look like? In the past 24 hours brown grasslike algae and purplish algae showed up. it seems to only be in areas of high water flow. ph - 7.8 ammonia - .25 ppm nitrite - 0 ppm nitrate - 10 ppm

Alright so I have officially decided to turn the 55 gallon into the saltwater. Everything is on sale on craigslist so once it's sold I am converting. Oh. Different terminology. water developement to me. Ya I know about cycling. I was gonna "cycle" it for like 4 weeks with live rock and sand.

what exactly does cycle the tank mean. and so no need for the drip wet/dry method. just take that out of the mix and do the sump/refugium???

    Help from step one

Ya ok, didn't see the originating sight. oops. ok...So what I have figured so far is that live rock and sand will keep the tank clean enough with regular water changes. and for beginning that is fine. as I develop my tank getting the sump/refugium plus wet/dry filter plus skimmer will benefit...
