    Dosing magnesium? Calcium?

I've been using IO almost exclusively for around 30 yrs and never had any issues with it. I'm not saying it's the best or that others are better or worse, but it works for me and many, many others. There is a reason it's been around as long as it has. I've use the regular Red Sea and I do like...

    water issues

I am assuming the tank water is where you got the high nitrate reading. Did you test your new water? The easiest way to drop nitrates is water changes...and lots of them. It's all a matter of math to determine how long it will take to drop it. If you do a 20% water change (and this is of course...

    Dosing magnesium? Calcium?

Did you test the new water before adding it? Don't go crazy chasing numbers. Your parameters look good. Calcium may be a little low but not low enough to really worry about. I would sort of think there may be a testing error on that final number. As far as wondering if they should be higher...

    Dosing magnesium? Calcium?

I always stop when I see the color change. I think he added too much and got a higher reading than he actually has.

    Dosing magnesium? Calcium?

I would question the accuracy of your mag test results. Mag test kits can be hard to read. When calcification occurs (corals forming their hard skeletons and coralline algae growing) a set ratio of calcium, alk and mag is used. For approximately 18ppm of calcium used, 1meq/l (2.8 dKH) of alk is...

    Is this normal ???

When calcification occurs (corals forming their hard skeletons and coralline algae growing) a set ratio of calcium, alk and mag is used. For approximately 18ppm of calcium used, 1meq/l (2.8 dKH) of alk is used and 2ppm of mag is used. Taking that into consideration, your mag test is off quite a...

    Questions Questions!

Which parameters are you talking about? Ammonia should always be 0, and it looks like you got live rock directly from the ocean and put it in your tank. There was probably no die off, so no rise in ammonia, plus the bacteria in/on the rock is keeping the ammonia away. Calcium, alkalinity and...

    Stupid Question !!!!

Adding 1 of anything per 100 will give the same result as adding 10 per 1,000. So, if adding 1ml for every 100 liters adds 2 ppm to calcium, adding 10 for 1,000 will also add 2 ppm.

Exactly which PAR38 bulb do you have? Some are OK for reef tanks, some are not.

    Why are my fish dying?

Impossible to say without more info. How long has your tank been running? How long have you had the fish? Were they eating good? Did they look healthy...frayed fins, sunken belly, sore, spots, etc? What is your salinity and how do you test it? What is your nitrate and ammonia and what brand...

Help! Accidentally overdosed calc (the calc part of the ESV 2 part)

I wouldn't do anything, and I definitely would not try to raise alkalinity any more. Even tho the calcium is higher than you noramlly keep it, some salts have calcium almost that high out of the box. Just let it drop on it's own and keep with your normal water change routine. Obviously you won't...

    which water is the best?

You can raise salinity by using saltwater instead of freshwater for top offs or when doing a water change make the salinity in the new water higher than what your tank is reading.

    which water is the best?

It's best to use RO/DI water for top-offs and water changes unless you have done some extensive testing on your tap water and know it's "good". As far as salinity.... http://www.ronshimek.com/salinity_temperature.html "Coral reefs are generally located in areas that have salinities in the range...

    Tap Water experiment

Not sure what your goal is since you say you might not put in any livestock. Anyway, it depends on the quality of your tap water. Some places have good tap water, others not so good. What effect does salinity have on test results ?

The average salinity on the reefs around the world is 35 ppt or 1.026 SG. Being salinity is probably the easiest parameter to control, there is no reason to keep it any lower than what is natural. What are you using to test your salinity? Hydrometer or refractometer? Here's a few good articles...

What effect does salinity have on test results ?

You will get different readings at different salinities. Going from 1.023 to 1.025 will slightly raise your alk, calcium and mag, but it won't be a very big difference. Higher salinity means more salt is used when mixing. More salt means higher levels.
