Rusty/Brown color all over my sand

Careful with the WalMart water jarock. I tested mine, and it was not reef-worthy IMO. You can get a 'good enough' TDS (total dissolved solids) meter for $20. I bought the 1g 'distilled water' jugs from walmart. I avoided their dispenser thing. TDS was too high for my taste.

    Nano, Nano, Nano

Looking at somewhere in the 12g range. 6g seems too small for even a single fish w/ CUC, and the 24g ones are too expensive. I'd like to get a Clownfish / Anenome and then some easier starter frags. A shrimp would be cool (wife wants one pretty bad,) but I have a hunch there won't be enough for...

    Nano, Nano, Nano

Looking for some more info on nano tanks. Who makes good coral friendly ones? On a tank that small it seems like CF lighting is pretty common. Is that enough? I'm looking at Dr F&S right now, but I'm looking for input from you fine folks. I figure a nano will give me something to hold me over...

    48" long Tank Support Points...

Pictures would help. Depends on how the rest of the stand is put together. They may have designed it with some really heavy-duty materials.

RO/DI waste water. OK for animals?

I'm thinking I'll give it a TDS read and see what it looks like. I grew up on well water, so I doubt even 100% more concentrated city water would phase me...

RO/DI waste water. OK for animals?

Actually, Arm & Hammer or Mr Clean or whatever had that 'car rinsing' attachment for your hose a little while back. It was just RO water. Same thing for the 'spot free rinse' at a car wash. Just filtered water. I'm talking about using the waste water which has higher TDS levels though, so...

RO/DI waste water. OK for animals?

Just curious - Anyone give their cat or dog the higher TDS waste water from the RO/DI unit? Looking for more ways to re-use this type of water. Laundry and garden have been good suggestions thus far. Water rates in my town have risen 60% over the last 3 years due to a water treatment plant being...

    DIY Chiller

Dorm fridges are pretty expensive to run. When compared to a chiller that is designed for the job, I'd go for an actual chiller if you need one. Now if you were storing some fish food in a mini freezer in a fish room anyway It could work if you wanted to lower the temp a few degrees.... Maybe...

    brilliant or lucky

How old is your daughter? Age permitting, I'd try to get her involved. Make her write down the name of the fish and help her research it back home. Then she can learn why some fish don't work out with Corals and some will hurt each other. Then again if she is 3 like my niece, she just wants...

    Help

Good for you for asking for help! You're lucky to have stumbled across this forum. The people here have held the hand of many newbies over the years and they do so with more patience than most of them deserve!! There are lots of articles out there on the web for information. I personally have...

    Round 2 - 75g vs 90g vs 120g?

There have been a couple tempting ones in some local reef club forums, but I've been too late thus far!

    Round 2 - 75g vs 90g vs 120g?

Good info there. Knew I could count on you folks for some helpful insight, thanks! I'm contemplating a used tank vs a new one. I know there are some risks if they used copper or something, but a new tank is significantly more than a used one would be. I may save up and go new regardless. If I...

    what's eating my elegance?

Definitely a possibility. Do you have any flat rocks that the elegance could go on temporarily to see if that improves? Otherwise a small piece of acrylic set underneath it on the sand might do the trick to ward them off if they are in the sand only...

    Good Ole Reef Central

I frequent my local club's board on RC. It is where we determine meeting dates / times, etc. We put up with the rules because no one is willing to go through the hassle of becoming an 'official' club. We like it casual and easy. Sorry to hear about the ban though. Honestly, if I was in there...

    Round 2 - 75g vs 90g vs 120g?

Hey all, Haven't been around for awhile. I was a fairly active newbie around here awhile ago. Had a 125g I was going to set up. Never got around to it due to some financial reasons and I sold it to help pay for some stuff. Since then I've gotten everything back together, and my new bride is...

dustins first tank. 120 gallon(lots of pics)

I don't even have water in my tank yet, but I'd advise you to get the aquascaping the way you like it before you get much livestock in there. It would be a real shame for a rockslide to kill a fish or a cool coral you just picked up. As for quantity of LR, I'd let someone with more experience...

    Wavemaker for a 6' tank?

A guy in my local club is selling a wavemaker with 4x Maxi-jet 1200s. Think that would be enough push for my 6' tank? I also have 2x Koralia 3s that I planned on using for random flow. Would those mess up the wavemaker's rhythm? --------------- One Red Sea Wavemaster Pro microprocessor pump...

    Coral and Fish reference books

I'm looking for a reference guide for corals and fish that I can keep in my car in case I drop into a random fish store. For corals, it should talk about flow and lighting requirements, growth rate, amount of chemical warfare vs other corals, etc. For fish it should talk about max size, food...

    Reverse osmosis unit

A great work-around for the temperature that I've read in a few different places is to get an extra 25' or so of tubing and extend the "RO in" water line and coil it in a 5g bucket. Throw some plain ol tap water in the bucket with a small heater. This will raise the inbound temp and should get...
