    Coral Recommendations?

a toadstool goes well with clowns, mine are hosting in one at the minute. For colour and ease why not go for mushrooms and ricordeas, you can get some very nice ones.

Why using tap water is a bad idea

Almost every newcomer to the hobby asks the same question…Can I not just use tap water in my tank?...The answer to this is a resounding unequivocal NO! This article will hopefully tell you why using tap water can lead to disaster in a marine tank. Natural sea water (NSW) contains hundreds of...

    first fish?

as above leave it till one of your last fish. If you add new rock with livestock in the tank make sure it has fully cured/cycled before adding it. $50 dollars is pretty cheap for a flame angel. They're upwards of $100 in the UK

    What to do if anything...

hey, what are the normal ranges? at 3 1/2 weeks that could be anything. the algae is normal, I would get rid of as much as possible. What do you have in the canister? I would only have carbon and maybe some filter floss at a push or get rid of it entirely. If you do keep carbon in it, clean it...

    little confused

corals do not significantly affect the biological filtration of the tank as they have no waste so you can add lots at once. I would take it slow if you're new though.

    Flameback vs. Potter's angel

i was looking at these a while back and the place I read said that potter's angels are very hard to keep and they tend not to flourish in a home aquarium. Think it might have been bob fenners book.

Do phosphate and nitrate graphs correlate?

they don't have exactly the same removal methods. If you use a phosphate reactor this will not remove nitrate so in that way they are unrelated. i.e. the presence of one does not influence the presence of the other.

    Help

wouldn't worry about it, I would say it'll be all over the place for a few weeks at least. Just don't add anything for a while. This is one of the reasons why I can't understand people that add stock after 1 or 2 weeks (not saying you have), the nitrogen cycle may have finished but the pH...

Do phosphate and nitrate graphs correlate?

no, unless you were using polyfilter or something else that actively removes both, even then the removal rates would probably be different.

How do you quiet your overflow

I'm using an s trap about half way between the tank and sump to slow the water down, can't really comment on its effectiveness as I've only just installed it tonight

    How to pack up corals?

softies can just go in a bag of water, for certain lps and sps, put them on some polystyrene using an elastic band and put them in the water upside down. This will ensure they are always submerged. Pack them in a box with a heat pack and plenty of bubble wrap. Should be ok for a while like that.

    Gobies

try and get one that is feeding on frozen or flake too, if your tank is not big enough it will not have enough food from just the sand

    Activated Carbon and PhosGaurd

yeah you can, but carbon works better at lower flow rates, i have mine in a filter bag just hanging in the back of the tank behind some rocks. I give it a shake every few days and replace it every few weeks.

    pissed off big time

if it's true whitespot, the tang will more than likely die if not treated along with the majority of the other fish. If it's not whitespot the tang may recover on it's own. You got any pics?

    HOB filter?

some people say the red sea prizm is worse than useless, I haven't tried it so I am not going to tell you to get rid but keep an eye on it, make sure it's doing a good job.
