Tank Additives: To use or not to use?

If you keep up with water changes generally your trace elements should be replenished in the setup you described as long as you don't keep too many corals that require and utilize higher concentrations of trace elements. Usin a good quality salt like Tropic Marin, will help keep the trace...

    pH swing

pH fluctuates through the day. The net consumption of carbon dioxide during the daylight hours, leads to some aquariums to become deficient in CO2 during the day, and the pH rises. If you are having dramatic fluctuations you can aerate the aquarium water to degass excess carbon dioxide. Also try...

    Lr freshwater dip

I prefer not doing freshwater dips on my corals/invertebrates because of their poor ability to osmoregulate, I fear that some polyps may get damaged (cell repture) duing the procedure.

liitle white bugs on frogspawn wont die!

Coral Rx should work to help clear it up. To help prevent an infestation of white bugs, I dip all my new corals in an iodine bath like Tropic Marin Pro Coral Cure before introducing them into my tank. Understandably I get a bit paranoid about introducing things like flatworms etc into my display...

    Fresh water dip??

I wouldn't do a freshwater bath on any coral since invertebrates have a very poor ability to osmoregulate and fresh water baths cause their cells to rupture (thats why people use freshwater baths on fish to treat ich)

    red slime and green alge

Algae problems are usually caused by aquarium water with excess nutrients like phosphate, nitrates etc. You can try and siphon out what you can to remove the algae in the short term. In the long term you may have to examine how you care for your tank. There are some commercial dry foods also...

    Aptasia problem

When I see Aiptasias I inject Tropic Marin Elimi-Aiptas directly into the stalk near the base of the anemone instead near the mouth/tentacles. I find that I get a much better kill rate that way.

    Devils hand.

Leather coralssometimes shed a waxy film to rid their surfaces of attached algae or detritus. They may remain closed for a few days before shedding this film, but it is usually a normal process. Strong water flow can help slough off the film layer.

    limp toadstool

Leather corals will sometimes stay closed for several days or shed a waxy film layer as part of their growing process. A little extra flow may help stimulate the leather to open up again.

    Mushroom coral not opening??

From my experience I believe that mushrooms really benefit from elevated Iodine levels in the aquariums (arround .06ppm) although some may disagree. I have found that elevated Iodine causes greater polyp extension and better colour. These observations are also noted in Reef Aquarium Vol2. If you...

    Nitrates

A large water change will help bring down your nitrates in the short term but keeping excess nutrients out of the aquarium water is one key element in reducing your NO3 in the long run. As you now know, dirty bio media become a nitrate factory, most people don't use any additional bio media...
