    Long time no sea....

Lol! How is life with a flying can opener? At least the fish cant poop on the carpet! I've got two cats and I expect life is going to an escalating battle field to keep them out of the tank. I'm figuring I'll be getting one of those nice all in one kits they are making these days so I don't...

    Long time no sea....

Veterinary medicine! And it has taken me on quite the state school tour. Colorado State University --> North Carolina State University --> Kansas State University. I'm almost done with my residency at Kansas and getting ready to move to New Mexico and actually get a job.

    Long time no sea....

Hey everyone! It's been forever and half since I have been around and very active, like 2012ish? Life got real busy with grad school, but I am almost done and looking forward to getting back into it. Just wondering who is still around and looking forward to meeting the new people around. I'm...

    Living Reefs Action Plan!

Hey guys! I know I have been part of the problem by not being on here much, I'll make an effort to come back more often. But one thing to look forward to is the release of Finding Nemo 2. That I imagine will bring a lot of new people to hobby. My suggestion for keeping things bumping on this...

    Can't get rid of Nitrates!

It does, which goes to feed the filter feeders

    Can't get rid of Nitrates!

I feed rods food which a blend of everything and it seems to have a small impact on nitrates and I usually have quite a bit that goes uneaten. But there are quite a few different frozen foods, like emerald entree and others I can't remember the name of at the moment. You can also make your own...

    Can't get rid of Nitrates!

The brine and mysis could also be adding to the nitrates, those food sources are known to be high in nitrates for a frozen food. I personally would suggest mixing it up some more, it will be a bit more nutrious too

The problem with canister filters is that they just trap debris, and then it rots down to nitrates, phosphates and other dissolved organics which are just washed right back out to the main tank to feed algae and create water quality issues that are detrimental to corals and inverts. Protein...

    One week update

you should wait to do any water changes until the cycle is finished, otherwise you can prolong your cycle. Also go ahead and start up your protein skimmer, they take a few weeks to break in so you might as well do that while the tank is cycling. And once your cycle is done, all of your rock...

    Nice to join.

You should remove the cover, it will make your tank healthier. Also that is a good temp range for a tank, you dont need a chiller at all. In fact I would increase the setting on your heater to keep the temp more stable at 78. Also, chemi-pure is actually an antibiotic and we dont suggest using...

56 Gallon Tall - Beginner Status

I would suspect that the filter and crushed coral were contributors to your friends tank crashing, I would not repeat that mistake.

    New addition

Then that was not the issue then
  17. little_fish

    New addition

When anemones die they release their stinging cells which can float around in the tank to sting and kill your fish. If there is not stray voltage, that would be my guess. However, they could be stressed from the move to the new tank. When did you move them to the new tank and did you acclimate...

56 Gallon Tall - Beginner Status

I would change out the crushed coral now before you have a bunch of other stuff in there. The sand is going to fall to the bottom and the crushed coral will end up on top turning into a gigantic crap trap, causing endless water quality issues. Also the canister filters dont work well in...
