    disappearing fish

Hi everyone, About four months ago I added a pair of juvenile clowns to our 40g mixed reef tank. At the time they were sharing the space with 3 blue/green chromis, a pair of cleaner shrimp, and a CUC (we have a good skimmer). Two weeks ago though, I woke up to find one of the clowns missing...

    Diatoms or something else?

Hmm ok, so I'm still trying to decide whether they're dinoflagellates or diatoms, and it seems like the main issue there would be doing water changes or not, correct? Either though way it seems like I should leave the lights out for several days to see if it improves. This won't hurt our coral...

    Diatoms or something else?

Is there anything that gets rid of them?

    Diatoms or something else?

Hi everyone, I have a 40 gallon mixed reef tank that's been running for about four months. For the past month or so I've had what I thought was a diatom outbreak, and dealt with it by leaving the lights out every third day or so and feeding every other day. It's never gotten better, but for a...

    cheaper-running lights?

Hmm this means my housemates overcharged me for electricity last month. It was probably all of their Xboxs and space heaters jajaja...

    cheaper-running lights?

Hmm, ok, that makes me think now it may have been something else in the house... Are there any other piece of equipment that are particularly expensive to run? We have a 150w heater and a Reef Octopus HOB skimmer with a couple of medium Hydor Koralias. Any ideas?

    cheaper-running lights?

I might be calculating that wrong, I'm not exactly sure how much the light alone is contributing to the bill. But it's running on a 12 hour cycle.

    cheaper-running lights?

The only markings on them say "SPS 400w," and the extra cost is from the whole system combined, I'm sure. But everything I've read seems to indicate that the light is the major draw with heating a close second?

    cheaper-running lights?

Hi everyone, A few months back I bought a used 40 gallon tank (not assembled), and set it up with a few fish, some basic inverts, and plans to add some soft coral. It came from a hobbyist who is much more advanced than I am, and so I also got his MH light (10 watts/gal) as part of the deal...

    chili coral care

Wow, that was a really alliterative title. Hi everybody, We just got a Chili coral frag, and I just wanted to check in to make sure we've taken care of all the major points in terms of caring for it. There isn't a convenient place to put it upside down in our tank, so we laid it in a crevasse...

zombie starfish legs / diatom attack

I don't know if that's reassuring or frightening, jaja... One more unrelated question - we just got a beautiful frag of a chili coral, and I'm wondering how to judge whether it's happy or not? I did a lot of research on it, and I think I've covered all the bases - light acclimatization for the...

zombie starfish legs / diatom attack

Hi again, So several weeks ago we had our first and thankfully, only casualty in the tank - a serpent star that only lasted about a day after a big salinity spike we had due to a broken hydrometer. It did the typical, really pathetic starfish death sequence where one by one its legs fell off...

    reclusive goby - starvation risk?

First off, thanks everyone for all of the advice, I really appreciate it. I love keeping the tank, but it can be kind of stressful at times, as I'm sure you all know. Second, I have a follow-up question about stocking limits. Right now we have a 40 gallon long with: 3 Blue/Green Reef Chromis...

    reclusive goby - starvation risk?

Us too! We were so happy when he came out! :D I'll try to find another one to add, thanks for the advice!

    reclusive goby - starvation risk?

We just moved the rock we thought he was under, and it appeared! So it's in there. As far as it not being a solitary fish, is there any way we could pair it with another? Maybe if we put it in quarantine for a while and then re-introduced it with a second goby?

    reclusive goby - starvation risk?

Hi again, We're having some trouble with a particularly reclusive zebra bar goby that we bought about two weeks ago. At first its only tank-mate other than the CUC was a yellowtail damsel what was sold to us as a chromis (we're new to this, we didn't realize). Though it hid immediately on...

    dead snail/feeding question

I have no idea what species the cowrie is, unfortunately. I tried to look it up, but I couldn't find photos for all the species...and there are so many! It looks similar to Cypraea arabicula though in terms of the pattern of its shell. I'm not sure what they feed at the store, I'm going to go...

    dead snail/feeding question

Well, the snail is definitely dead. I pulled him out yesterday and the smell was definitely rancid. Bummer :( We did, however, add a beautiful cowrie who seems to be doing really well. He perked up after just one day and seems really content. The goby is a zebra bar goby, and I've tried...

    dead snail/feeding question

Hi everybody, One of the turbos I bought last weekend has been sitting immobile on the sand for the past few days. I thought for a while he might still be alive, but after so much time and no movement, I'm pretty sure he's dead. I picked him up and he looked 'sealed up' inside the opening, but...
