    Dry Rock Pillar

Sorry for the late response, I've been away from home for quite some time. I was referring to something similar to Big K's structure. Here are some pictures of how I built one of my "towers". Everything is held together by plaster. Once the plaster set, I removed all the wires. This...

    Dry Rock Pillar

It looks great. Did you use any resin/plastic "skeleton" to keep the tower together in case the load-bearing parts crack/erode? You don't want a 20 pound baseball bat swinging from inside the tank.

    Mystery Crab ID Please

I don't think that is an emerald crab. Emerald (mithrax) crabs have that distinct spoon-like shape at the very tip of their claws. That crab has slender and sharp claws. I would not add it to the tank until you have observed it to be a herbivore/scavenger only.

    Rockstacker's 120g Build

On a sad note, sometime in late 2014 something completely wiped out my euphelias. I had two nice torch corals and a frogspawn growing fast. Then within 4-5 days they all melted. No other corals were affected though.

    Rockstacker's 120g Build

Hey All, it has been a while since I last posted. Things have been really busy at work. Anyway, I just wanted to share the progress on my goniopora. I have had gonioporas in the past and they never lived longer than 3-4 months. Maybe I got a rebel lol.

Black lava rock in a saltwater aquarium?

There is no significant problem with lava rock, you just need to be aware of their properties compared to traditional aragonite type rocks. Most lava rock has very minimal limestone (if any) due to how they were created. And in most cases they are completely inert. Now this may be good or bad...

    Dosing Red Sea NO3-No4.-x

I too have been using NO3:PO4-X for several months now. I followed the recommended starting dose based on the tank size and then adjusted the dose based on the subsequent NO3/PO4 readings. I also dose daily with Reef Energy A&B at 8ml each (100 gallon tank) Based on a Red Sea Pro test kit: NO3...

    Cheato in a reactor

In theory it should work. But practicality wise, I'm not sure how chaeto would react to being cramped up inside a reactor tube.

    Nitrates too low?

It really depends on what "0" means. Most test kits would register undetectable nitrates because they do not have resolutions low enough to show the actual values (which may not be really 0). The 0.25ppm-1ppm recommended nitrates value is to ensure that all zooxanthellae get their allotment of...

    BioLoad Question

For the purpose of bacterial colonization, "porosity" is not in the order of fractions of inches. We are talking about micrometers or even nanometers. Even coralline algae that would seem like a solid mat over the rock would still be porous enough for the bacteria to colonize with the same...

    t5 ho refector

Looks great. The individual reflectors will have a significant boost to light directed towards the tank.

    Review of Marineland Ml90512 Maxi-Jet 1200 , 295/1300GPH

I had one of those in my frag tank some time ago. One thing I do not like about them is that the suction cups eventually wear out and the powerhead falls off. In my frag tank this happened within a couple of months. Now I just use it as a circulation pump for my salt mixing bucket. After using...

Can you help a newbie identify some things?

Unfortunately, you inherited a tank that is way behind the curve. Majano infestation There are just so many in your tank that it would take you many months to get rid of all of them. And there is no guarantee that there are no tiny fragments left that can regenerate. Caulerpa macroalga - It...

    BioLoad Question

This depends primarily on the type of rock that is used. The typical reef rocks available in the hobby contain high portions of aragonite and are very porous. With the combined effects of water movement, CUC grazing and erosion/dissolution of aragonite, it is virtually impossible to completely...

    Mushroom - Out Of Control

It looks like the zoas are competing for space on multiple fronts there. It might be easier just to move or frag out the zoas to a spot with more space.

    First tank help plz

Clownfish are in the damsel family. But a 5 gallon is cutting it too close for even one fish of any kind. Water quality issues can be alleviated, but aggression would be more difficult to address. And yes, a fish that is put in very tight quarters can start to fight with itself.

    Finger Leather Coral Damage/Issue

It does not looks like normal bleaching due to lights. Bleaching would more more widespread on the areas that were exposed to high light. It looks like it could be getting stung by a neighbor. Are there any other corals that are near it? It could also be a coral predator as Aquarian has...

Doesing Kalk and Baked Backing soda

If you are still trying to fine tune the dosing regimen, I would choose either kalkwasser dosing or 2-part exclusively, but not both. Kalk doses both calcium and bicarbonates (alkalinity) in proportional doses. Whether it can keep up with your tank's demand is another matter (within the limits...
