I have had check valves in my system and did not have any clogging problems with them. However if the power fails when you are not around (which most likely will be the case!!) Then I don't think check valves would help.

Are you building the display and stand by yourself? Also will anything be behind a dry wall?

This may be a little late to post this. But I would say that it is not necessary to boil rock. The live stuff is dead and decomposed if it was sitting dry for a while. That said, I guess by now the rock has been in your tank for 2 weeks and has stuff growing on it already!!
