    Cheap ATO

If the power shuts off, the water level should raise in the sump by a couple inches. If it kicks back on for a couple seconds, it shouldn't suck the water out that fast. Even if it did, I don't think it drain that much out of the jug. It kinda gurgles out since it has to get an air pocket.

    HOB versus Sump

Mine is about 18 years old if that helps any. I bought it with a stand and canopy.

    Cheap ATO

Just an idea I had. Rather then spend the money on an electric ATO, why not just make one using a "water cooler" jug? If you have the room under your cabinet, make a bracket to support the jug upside down in the return area of your sump at the desired height. You could even silicone a piece of...

    No water changes?

I was actully looking at the plans in the DIY section under "Sump 101" and was planning on getting an Octopus skimmer as it's the one everybody recommends. Ebay has some baffle kits someone is selling for like $45. It seems resonable for being precut and tinted to keep the light in the fuge area.

    HOB versus Sump

    If I remember correctly, it's an All-Glass.

    No water changes?

I'm so glad I started asking these questions. An RO filter was not something I origanally budgeted for. Iwas only planning on powerheads, skimmer, return pump, and baffles to make my sump box out of an old 20gal tank I have. I was planning on just doing a fowlr tank. But you never know in the...

    No water changes?

The owner mentioned something about burying a sock of something under the live rock to help sustain the chemistry. Don't remember what, but that was part of the "no change" procedure. I read that article you posted. I understood 75% of it. Like I said, I always believed in changes. I just...

    No water changes?

Everyone talks about topping off their tank with RO. How do you go about making RO? Thanks for that last reply Wonton. That's the kind of experience based response I was looking for. In my mind I believe water changes are the way to go. I just wanted to hear the opposition's response. Not...

    No water changes?

I was at my local aquarium store yesterday trying to learn about reef tanks as I'm coming from a freshwater tank. The owner was telling me how she/they are in the "No water change" frame of mind. They use supplements to keep everything in check. Does anyone here use this process instead of doing...

    HOB versus Sump

I plan to take the tank to the glass shop to have them drill it. I figure it's their responsibility if it cracks. As for the water changes, it sounds like they use this method on their store and personal tank. This is a local ma and pop store that I used to deal with for my freshwater tank...

    HOB versus Sump

I actually went to the local pet store that does alot of saltwater stuff today. The owner helped me out alot in deciding what set upto go with. I think I'm going to have a hole drilled in the back of the tank a couple inches down and put an intake elbow pointing upward on an angle to use gravity...

    HOB versus Sump

I asked these questions in "New to Reefing", but I figured this is a better place. I'm planning my tank to set up this winter and I want to do it right the first time. 1. Is there a benefit to a sump over HOB skimmer other then water chemistry stability? 2. I don't want to have to pee every...

Setting up first salt tank Part2.

OK, I've been giving it some thought. I was planning a HOB skimmer and a couple powerheads. Now I need more info on a sump system. I did look at some of the post and home builds and what not on this site, but have some questions. First, what are the benefits over a HOB? Most importantly, which...

Setting up first salt water tank.

Thanks for the replies. Now that a couple people said it, I think I do remember omitting the filters. I think I was considering one of them for the carbon and the fact that it has biowheels for the bacteria. Do the Octopus skimmers have a built in pump? Or do I have to buy a seperate one? I...

Setting up first salt water tank.

I have a 90gal tank that had been previously used for fresh water fish. It's been in storage for about 5 years and I'm planning on trying my hand at salt water. So far I've read a few books and have "The New Marine Aquarium" that I've been using for all my reference. I have 2 filters from the...
