New Marco Rock Ready For Display??

There probably wasn't a spike. There isn't anything in there to cause your ammonia to spike. Marco rock is dry rock (at least they don't have it for sale on their website yet) and if there wasn't a lot of die off on your live rock, there isn't anything to produce ammonia. Take a small piece of...

    The first of many questions

The rock is here and both the sand and rock are in the tank. I did a 20% water change today. Both ammonia and nitrites are at 0 still. Nitrates were at 10 before the water change and 0 afterwards. I also ordered a cleanup crew from reef cleaners which should be here wed or thurs. I'll probably...

    starting to set up sump

Any input on how much rubble in my sump? About 1/4 or half full? Does anybody know of somewhere there are examples of people's refugiums? I looked through a bunch of the tank subforum but it was a lot to sift through for such a specific part of the tank. (Although I did enjoy seeing other...

    starting to set up sump

My display tank is cycled and I feel confident to start getting the sump ready to go. I have a 30g tank that is divided into 3 sections. The first section will be where the overflow drops the water into the sump and will also contain the skimmer. The second section will be the refugium...

    The first of many questions

Ok tested my water tonight... and we are cycled! 0 ammonia, 0 nitrites, and 10 nitrates. I moved the hermit crab to the main tank. I figured he can be the guinea crab. If he lives for a while, I'll know the tank is ready for other life forms. I ordered 60 lbs of dry rock from marcos rocks which...

    The first of many questions

Ok... update and a couple more questions? Ammonia at .25, nitrites on their way up and nitrates are stable at 10. Life on my live rock has exploded in the last few days with little feather dusters, and snails showing up all over the place. Coraline is already starting to gain its color back...

    The first of many questions

Ok, tank is set up and been cycling for about a week. I have 10 lbs of live rock with about 25 lbs of dry rock. I'll hopefully be adding more rock soon when I get the funds. I tossed in a raw shrimp to speed up the process. My ammonia looks to be between 4.0 and 8.0. Can I take the shrimp out...

    The first of many questions

Thanks everybody! New question, I got about 10 lbs of live rock from the not so lfs. When I got it home it has at least 1 hermit crab and a bunch of snails living on it. Are they going to survive the cycling? Should I remove them and keep them in the 10g while the large tank cycles?

    The first of many questions

Ok, so after seeing a lot of people suggesting craigslist for used tanks, I found a 75g tank with a 30g sump and just about everything I need for less than it would have cost me to set up the 55g! the display is a 75g, comes with a stand, the sump/refugium is a 30 long tank with 3 stages...

    The first of many questions

Thanks for the replies. Now I read in a different post that for a 55g tank your powerheads should move 1000-2000 gph. So if I get 3 that move 600 gph what is the pest positioning for them? 1 on each side and 1 in the back? Or 2 on 1 side? Should they be low so the are circulating just above...

    The first of many questions

I am looking to put together a 55 gallon fish with live rock tank. Can I add corals further down the road if I have proper lighting? It seems like there is so much information I feel a bit overwhelmed. As I have a limited budget, I probably won't be able to buy everything at once. I have...

    Hello!

Hi everybody! I have been wanting to try my hand at a salt water tank for a while but I have been living in apts and didn't want to have to move a tank. I purchased a house about a month ago, have a little spare cash and a 55 gallon aquarium in my basement... so I want to set one up.
