doesnt hurt, not necessary if you keep up with water changes that should suffice , if you want peace of mind (like i did) you can get an HOB or in tank , i myself went with hydor in tank skimmer , works like a charm and was one of the cheapest (with good reviews)

+1 On Hydor slim skim, I also have it. Just make sure you have enough room for it though, since it is quite high ( the normal one).
Maybe you could try the nano one if the other is too big.
