Which is better to aerate the water before a water change?

Powerhead. Air stones will get clogged with salt and don't do as good of a job mixing as powerheads do.

I have always used a single power head in a five gallon bucket, and it has worked fine for me.

Also, How long do you aerate the water for?

I usually start mine mixing on wednesday evening after I get home from work,then do my water change either on saturday or sunday evening.

You should let it aerate at least overnight before adding it to your tank.

24 hours atleast, however, when I was in a hurry I did it for about 12 and all was fine.

Powerhead definitely,the salt gets mixed better

I would at least wait overnight but 24 hrs is better.

Powerhead is better less mess and I would go with 24 hours as well.

guess I am lucky and have never killed anything. I have never done anything more than stir up the water with my hand til the salt is dissolved and let it sit for about 5 minutes and then dump it right into the water. Guess I have more room for error with a larger tank. Huh, guess you guys have given me something to think about with water changes. LOL:mrgreen:

i use an extra mj mod 1200 thats just sitting around which is about 2000+ gph in a 15 gallon bucket and mix for 2 hours with a heater to bring temp up to same as tanks temp than dump it
