I had my tank for years and never had a problem with algae. But recently i have been getting red algae.I thought it was my light buy new lights water flow is good and water is perfect. But I started to do week water change and that is when I think it started. I know this happens a lot in new tanks so can this happen if you change to much and ruin to bio cycle.

How much water are you changing out weekly?
And what water parameters have you tested?

Also, have you changed foods that you are feeding to the tank?

i have not changed the food I do 5 gal. once a week on a 40 gal. tank my water is good kh 9.2 cal.430 mg.1400 phos. 0.0

I heard turn off the light for 4 days and cover the tank but i cant do that it will shock my corals.

Corals should be fine for a few days w/o lights. The sun doesn't shine 7 days a week, after all.

Are you using rodi/distilled water? Check for phosphates, too.

No, it won't hurt your corals. Blackouts are a common treatment for algae and the corals will be fine.
