Ammonia Spike

I just got home from vacation and saw that one of my clownfish is gone. I can't find it anywhere and my ammonia level is about 0.25. I'm mixing water for a water change and doing other tests now. Is there anything else I can do besides change water to lower the ammonia?

nope.. just wait for the beneficial bacteria to convert the rest to nitrates and do a water change to lower it for now.

Water change should be good enough. If you can find the dead body, it would help more. Otherwise, the bacteria in your tank will turn the Ammonia to Nitrite and then Nitrate. It'll give you algae problem.

Also look into why your clown died in the first place. They're generally pretty tough fish as well. The Damsel's heavy breathing may be related to the ammonia, or it could be suffering from the same thing that killed your clown.

I dont really hold much stock in an ammonia kit thats showing .25 anyway.A lot of will show that even when it should be 0.
