My daughter (7) has learned about the nitrogen cycle and why we can't just put any ole fish or coral in her li'l 10 gallon :) She can do water tests, too. I figure it makes it easier for her to learn how nature works by actually doing it. She knows more about fishtanks than I did when I was 12 and started my own 2g hexagon tank...in which I put 3 mollies and a kuhli loach LOL.

lol my boyfriend and i have a small 10gl tank that just has kuhlis in it!! we love those things :) weve had one for 8 yrs now
