Calculating tank volume

Hi,

I just got a new tank and am a bit confused when trying to figure out what the water volume is. When calculating do i include the display tank and sump? Also, i know how much water was actually put in the system after sand and LR was added so maybe this is the figure to use?

The display tank is 180 x 53 x 45mm. The volume of water that actually went into the system is 350L (92 Gallon).

It can go either way. Some people include their total water volume when talking about their system, some do not.

When it comes to specifications for fish, though, only the display tank counts.

erin's got it right. if you want to calculate for purposes of stocking and comparing online recommendations they are indeed talking about an empty fish tank only. you can use this calculate to calculate your gallonage easily - http://www.dep.state.pa.us/dep/deputate/waterops/redesign/calculators/volcalchtm.htm

Thanks. So if im calculating a water change i would use the amount of water actually in the system?
