Can I add dead coral to tank?

can I add this tiny piece of dead sea-fan coral to my fish saltwater tank for decoration purpose only ;)

Yeah you can. It just won't look so nice once it's covered in algae.

I am sure there's a scientific reason, but I've lost a couple colonies over the years and they always seem to end up covered in nasty algae. My tank isn't in the best of shape at the moment, but even when it was nice and clean I had two old colonies that ended up getting cyano. Only them. Obviously I yanked them but it is curious...
