can starfish divide

can a sand star divide if its leg i cut off:question:

I know if you cut off a star fish limb it would grow one back.... (adrastos and biff I very well know I maybe wrong about the rest of this) which I am led to believe is true with most inverts (growing limbs back). I have a anemone crab that lost a pincher that is now growing one back. By theory you could cut a star fish in half it would grow into two different starfish kinda like a worm.

that is how many starfish reproduce but i dont know if it'd live if you were to cut one up

Some stars drop a leg and that leg will turn into another star.

The leg will regrow a body if it still has part of the disk attached... If it's just a leg and no part of the body is attached, then no, it's not likely to grow into another starfish.

I would not try that surgery myself. I like my sandstars just as they are. Although my Koran and Blue angels ripped apart my orange linkia the other day, legs everywhere, yeah... nothing grew into much of anything.
