Cooking Rock

Who all here has 'cooked' their rock?

What I've read makes it sound very desirable but some things come to mind:
1)Time. LOTS OF PATIENCE involved. Is it worth the two months wait?
2)cost. Lots of ro water, lots of salt. Is it worth the cost?
3)the potential loss of life. Is it worth possibly losing amphipods, or sponges, etc?

I know the end result is supposed to be like night and day though. Any opinions?
