DIY LED lights

So i decided to swap my T5's with LEDs on my 75gallon.... I have a few questions for those of you who are already running LED's and particularly ones who built theirs. Im thinking about 48 Leds with optics. What is a good ratio of blues to whites? Secondly, how high above the water should i keep these? I have a custom built canopy that i built and its roughly 12" inches high and the lights will be roughly 8 inches above the water. will this work? As for a splash guard, what is the best way to implement one of these and how do i attach it to the heat sink. Lastly, i see a lot of builds with people adding 1 or 2 t5 bulbs to their fixture to give it some purple to the tank. Should i do the same or will there be plenty of color for the tank that i dont need the purple. Its hard to tell with photos because not everyone has a camera capable of capturing the true color of the tank... Oh, and will 48 be enough lights for SPS corals, clams, and nems?
